Welcome to the Expected Classroom Treatment Study!
What is this study?
The study is titled "Expected Classroom Treatment." This study is being carried out to better understand how children expect themselves and their peers to be treated in a classroom setting based on their social identities. The study is being carried out through the Social and Emotional Development Lab at the University of Connecticut. Through this research, we hope to learn how and when children make attributions about race- and gender-based treatment.
What will my child and I have to do?
This is a fully online study, so you will need access to a computer and a stable internet connection to partake. Once you give your consent, your child will complete an online survey from a provided URL. At the beginning of the survey, we will also ask for your child's assent and they are free to take a break or terminate the study at any time. Your child will see a teacher say something to another student in a hypothetical classroom environment, and then report how they think they and other students in the classroom would be treated by the teacher. If your child is unable to respond in writing, we ask that you help them do so. The survey is estimated to take about 15 minutes, after which you will be asked to fill out a survey on your child's social circle and how often you discuss societal attitudes with your child.
What are the benefits of participating in this study?
Firstly, your child will get to see what an online psychological study looks like and be involved in research that may help inform how we understand the impact of gender and race in classrooms. Once the survey is complete, you and your child will receive a $10 digital gift card to Amazon which will be sent to the email you provide. Additionally, all participants are automatically entered into a raffle to receive one of six $20 Amazon gift cards, which will go out within 3 months after data collection is complete.
